This sphinx is one of the two granite sculptures from ancient Egypt. Their hieroglyphic inscriptions sing the praise of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, whose burial temple they once guarded. Since 1832 they face each other over the pier at the Neva River in front of the Academy of Arts.
