The Angel's Story by Greg Krut
St. Petersburg started with the construction of St.Peter-and-Paul fortress in 1703. The centerpiece of the fortress is the St.Peter-and-Paul Cathedral, begun in 1712 by the architect Domenico Trezzini. At the top of the spire of the cathedral, which is 122 meters high, there is the golden-plated weather vane in the form of the Angel holding the cross. The first figure made in 1722 after Trezzini's draft, was different from what you can see now. This new design belongs to the famous architect Antonio Rinaldy. As the years passed, the structure of the figure was damaged, and it lost its ability to turn after the wind. In 1992 it was disassembled and taken to the restoration company. The pictures you can see here were taken in 1995 during the last testing phase of the project before gilding.
